Privacy
The Old Web is deliberately small. It does not use advertising trackers, third-party analytics, browser fingerprinting or a suspicious toolbar installer.
Voting cookie
When you use the site, it creates a first-party cookie containing a random token. A one-way hash of that token is used to remember whether this browser has voted for a story. The cookie does not contain your name, email address or raw IP address.
Spam protection
Story and comment forms use timing checks, hidden honeypot fields, duplicate detection and rate limits. For rate limiting, the visitor’s IP address is converted into a keyed one-way hash before anything is stored. The raw IP address is not saved in the application database.
Submissions and comments
Anything you submit may be reviewed, edited for presentation, approved, rejected or deleted by the site administrator. Published names, handles, stories, comments and optional links are visible to the public. Do not submit information you do not want published.
External links
Contributors can include optional links to old sites, archive snapshots, screenshots, repos, profiles and related posts. Those destinations have their own privacy practices and are not controlled by The Old Web.
